SOA-C03 Exam Guide: CloudOps Engineer — Format, Domains, and How to Prepare

8 min read · Updated 2026-10-27

The AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer – Associate (SOA-C03) is the renamed and updated successor to the SysOps Administrator – Associate (SOA-C02, retired September 29, 2025). It validates operating production workloads on AWS — monitoring, reliability, deployment, security, and networking.

Key change from SOA-C02: five domains instead of six (Cost and Performance Optimization merged into Domain 1), plus new scope for containers (ECR/ECS/EKS), CDK, and multi-account/multi-Region operations.

Exam format at a glance

  • 65 questions — multiple choice and multiple response
  • 130 minutes — about 2 minutes per question
  • $150 USD
  • Passing score: 720 on a scaled range of 100–1000
  • Pearson VUE testing center or online proctored exam

The five domains

  • Domain 1: Monitoring, Logging, Analysis, Remediation, and Performance Optimization — 22%
  • Domain 2: Reliability and Business Continuity — 22% (up from 16% in SOA-C02)
  • Domain 3: Deployment, Provisioning, and Automation — 22% (up from 18%)
  • Domain 4: Security and Compliance — 16%
  • Domain 5: Networking and Content Delivery — 18%

What the exam actually tests

SOA-C03 is operations-first: CloudWatch metrics/alarms/logs (including agent-collected OS metrics like memory), Config-based compliance and EventBridge/SSM remediation, CloudFormation operations (drift, change sets), Systems Manager (Patch Manager, Session Manager, Automation), backup/DR implementation, and VPC/Route 53/ALB troubleshooting.

New-for-C03 scope includes container operations and CloudFormation/CDK provisioning — if you prepared on SOA-C02 materials, top up with ECS/EKS operational basics and CDK stack management.

A realistic prep plan

Budget 4–8 weeks. The exam rewards operational instinct — know not just what CloudWatch does, but which alarm/metric/log combination detects a given failure mode.

  • Weeks 1–2: Domains 1–2 — CloudWatch end-to-end, EventBridge remediation, AWS Backup, Auto Scaling health checks
  • Week 3: Domain 3 — CloudFormation drift/change sets, Systems Manager, patching, image pipelines, CDK basics
  • Week 4: Domain 4 — IAM operations, Config rules, Security Hub, compliance enforcement
  • Week 5: Domain 5 — VPC connectivity, Route 53, ALB health checks, CloudFront
  • Final week: timed practice + hands-on console drills on weak services
