SAP-C02 Exam Guide: Format, Cost, Domains, and How to Prepare

9 min read · Updated 2026-10-27

The AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (SAP-C02) is the pinnacle of the architecture track — validating the ability to design complex, multi-account, hybrid, and migration-scale solutions. It's widely regarded as the hardest AWS exam and the strongest signal for senior cloud architect roles.

This guide summarizes official exam details — confirm the current version on the AWS certification page before booking.

Exam format at a glance

  • 75 questions — long, multi-paragraph scenarios; multiple choice and multiple response
  • 180 minutes — about 2.4 minutes per question, but questions are dense
  • $300 USD
  • Passing score: 750 on a scaled range of 100–1000
  • Pearson VUE testing center or online proctored exam

The four domains

  • Domain 1: Design Solutions for Organizational Complexity — 26% (multi-account, hybrid connectivity, organizational guardrails)
  • Domain 2: Design for New Solutions — 29% (the largest — balancing security, reliability, performance, cost for greenfield)
  • Domain 3: Continuous Improvement for Existing Solutions — 25% (evolving and optimizing live architectures)
  • Domain 4: Accelerate Workload Migration and Modernization — 20% (6R strategies, DMS/SCT, discovery, cutover)

What the exam actually tests

SAP-C02 questions are multi-constraint scenarios: 'minimize cost AND meet RTO<15min AND work across 50 accounts.' The skill is reading requirements precisely and picking the option that satisfies ALL constraints — wrong answers usually fail exactly one constraint.

Recurring themes: AWS Organizations + SCPs, Transit Gateway vs PrivateLink vs peering at scale, hybrid DNS (Route 53 Resolver endpoints), multi-Region DR tiers (backup → pilot light → warm standby → active/active), data-migration tools (DMS, SCT, Snow family, DataSync), and cost governance (CUR, allocation tags, Savings Plans).

A realistic prep plan

Plan for 8–12+ weeks, especially if your experience is single-account or single-Region. The biggest gap for most candidates is organizational/multi-account architecture and hybrid networking — study those even if they're not part of your day job.

  • Weeks 1–2: Domain 1 — Organizations, SCPs, TGW/DX/VPN, hybrid DNS, shared services patterns
  • Weeks 3–4: Domain 2 — new-solution trade-offs: DR tiers, caching, data stores, global architectures
  • Week 5: Domain 3 — optimization: cost, performance, security, reliability on running systems
  • Week 6: Domain 4 — migration: discovery tools, DMS/SCT, Snow/DataSync, cutover patterns
  • Final weeks: long timed sets — train stamina for 3-hour, 75-question scenarios
