How to Pass SOA-C03: The SysOps Administrator's Guide

7 min read · Updated 2026-11-02

SOA-C03 (formerly SysOps Administrator Associate) is the associate exam most different from SAA — while SAA asks 'design the architecture', SOA asks 'operate, monitor, and fix it'. If you run AWS day-to-day, this is your exam. If your background is design rather than operations, expect the monitoring/operations domain to need the most work. Plan 3 weeks at 1.5–2 hours/day with existing AWS experience.

The operations-first mindset

SOA questions reward operational depth: alarm design, patching fleets, backup compliance, cost monitoring, and incident response. When two options both 'work', the correct one is usually the more operationally maintainable — managed services, automation, least manual toil.

  • Monitoring & remediation (largest domain): CloudWatch alarms/metrics/logs, EventBridge-driven remediation, SSM Incident Manager
  • Reliability & continuity: backup/DR implementation, multi-AZ ops, Route 53 health checks, scaling operations
  • Deployment & automation: CloudFormation ops (drift, stacksets), SSM Patch Manager/Automation, image pipelines
  • Security & compliance: IAM ops, Config rules, audit logging, patch compliance reporting
  • Networking & content delivery: VPC ops, NAT/ALB/NLB administration, CloudFront, DNS failover

Week 1 — Monitoring and remediation (days 1–7)

  • Days 1–2: CloudWatch end-to-end — metrics vs logs vs alarms vs dashboards, custom metrics, metric math, Logs Insights
  • Days 3–4: EventBridge + SSM remediation patterns — alarm → event → runbook, incident response automation
  • Days 5–6: AWS Config, CloudTrail, and audit operations — who did what, resource compliance
  • Day 7: untimed practice set — calibrate your ops vocabulary

Week 2 — Reliability, deployment, security (days 8–14)

  • Days 8–9: AWS Backup (plans, vaults, Vault Lock), DR tiers, ASG operations and health checks
  • Days 10–11: CloudFormation ops — stack drift, StackSets, change sets; SSM Patch Manager + maintenance windows
  • Days 12–13: security ops — IAM policy troubleshooting, Secrets Manager rotation, compliance reporting
  • Day 14: timed practice set — SOA scenarios are operational, practice incident-style questions

Week 3 — Networking, cost ops, and mocks (days 15–21)

  • Days 15–16: VPC operations — NAT gateways per AZ, Route 53 health/failover, ALB vs NLB admin, CloudFront ops
  • Day 17: cost operations — Cost Explorer, Budgets alerts, Trusted Advisor, tagging strategies
  • Days 18–19: first full timed mock (65 questions, 130 minutes)
  • Days 20–21: mistake review + second mock — target 75%+ with margin

Exam traps specific to SOA

  • Systems Manager family: Session Manager (shell), Patch Manager (patching), Run Command (one-off commands), Automation (runbooks) — the exam tests the boundaries
  • Metric filters alert on patterns; Logs Insights answers ad-hoc questions — different tools
  • NAT gateway is zonal — resilient designs need one per AZ
  • CloudFormation drift detection vs Config timeline — drift compares to template, Config shows change history
  • Composite alarms reduce noise — know why they exist

What 'ready' looks like

You're ready when timed mocks land at 75%+ and you can answer 'what does this do operationally' for every monitoring/SSM/backup service. SOA rewards operators — if you live in CloudWatch and SSM daily, this is the most passable associate exam for you.
